Summer ESL Program
The combination of language instruction and living with an American family maximizes your exposure to the English-speaking world in a personal and friendly atmosphere and the beauty of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont offers a wide range of recreational activities.
Upon arrival, each student will receive a comprehensive evaluation; students will be placed in one of three levels of instruction offered — Beginning, Developing, or Expanding.
All three levels of instruction emphasize the four core components of language development: reading, writing, conversation, and listening comprehension.
Class sizes are small to take advantage of one-on-one instruction and to provide a safe and comfortable environment that allows the student to experiment with their language development. In addition to English language development, the St. Johnsbury Academy ESL Summer Program works toward helping each student make the necessary adjustments for success while attending St. Johnsbury Academy.
In addition to three levels of English Language instruction, the ESL summer program offers introductory and refresher courses in algebra, to aid students in their English language development while studying mathematics. To assist with future plans for attending an American college or university, the ESL program also offers a course preparing students to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam.
As you learn material in the classroom, it is reinforced daily with afternoon and weekend activities, including a four day trip to Boston. Using new language skills in real-life situations is the key to developing life-long language skills. All students will be asked to speak only English while attending the program.
