SJA's Cowan named Gatorade's Vermont track athlete of year
ST. JOHNSBURY — St. Johnsbury Academy sophomore Katherine Cowan is Vermont's Gatorade girls track and field athlete of the year, the company announced Thursday.
Cowan is the second Hilltopper to earn the honor, joining Hannah Rowe (2009, 2010).
The award, given in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports, recognizes academic excellence as well as high standards of achievement and character off the field.
The 6-foot-1 Cowan snagged three individual Division I state crowns this spring as St. Johnsbury repeated for the team title. She won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles as well as the 200-meter dash and a third-place showing in the high jump. The 12-time state champion – Cowan was also dominant during the indoor season – set a state record with 5,156 points to win the decathlon state championship earlier this month.
"Katherine Cowan has been a dominant force this year in Vermont," said South Burlington coach Nate Bradbury in a news release. "She has had a phenomenal spring following an impressive winter."
Cowan has maintained a B-plus average in the classroom, volunteered as a mentor to a youth hurdler and with the Special Olympics, according to a news release.
"It's a big honor, the biggest statewide honor an athlete can get," SJA coach Chip Langmaid said. "There are a lot of good candidates out there, and a lot goes into it [the selection process]. It's not just about statistics."
