Seven Academy math students were selected to represent Vermont on the 20-member statewide Vermont All Stars math team, which will travel to Pennsylvania State University in late May. The team includes the top-performing students on the Vermont Talent Search, American Invitational Mathematics Examination, Vermont Math Prize, and the New England Math League Competitions as determined by the Vermont State Mathematics Coalition. The Academy was the only school in the state with seven students named to the team.
The students chosen for the team are: Fiona Sweeney '19 of Piermont, New Hampshire, Ziqi Gong '18 of China, Matthew Hunton '18 of Lyme, New Hampshire, Jianing Wu '19 or China, Zeou Wei '19 of China, Hanzhang Yu '19 of China, and Yichen Lyu '18 of China.
Sharon Fadden, Chair of the SJA Mathematics Department, said, "All of these students competed with the Academy math club throughout the school year. Their performance has given them an opportunity to join other excellent math students in this prestigious event. We are proud of them and their accomplishments."
Academy Headmaster Tom Lovett said, "Under the direction of Sharon Fadden, our math department has created a palpable math culture that strives for excellence on a number of levels. We are proud of the achievements of our math students at all levels and especially, in this case, these All Stars. Their families should be very proud as well!"
