The Graham Highlanders Pipe Band

Founded in 1998, The Graham Highlanders Pipe Band  was chartered with the intention to be of service to the school community, the Caledonia County region at large, and to educate youth in traditional Celtic performing arts.  The academic and extra-curricular program represents the only such high school based Celtic Arts initiative in New England.

The band wears the Graham of Montrose tartan in honor of SJA emeritus faculty member Mr. Graham Newell, a third generation descendant of the Grahams, who immigrated to the town of Peacham, VT in the early 19th century. The band has received written permission from the Clan Graham Society of North America to wear the Clan Graham armorial device on their glengarries (ceremonial caps).

Celtic Performing Arts

The Graham Highlanders is the Academy’s active extracurricular bagpipe, drum, and dance corps. It performs and competes regularly year-round. Students who wish an introduction to or to explore in more depth the Celtic arts should consider the curricular courses described below. 

Celtic Arts (Standard)

1 Credit (8843)

Prerequisite: none. Celtic Arts can be taken multiple times for credit

Students will receive introduction and instruction in one or more of several strands of Celtic performing arts: bagpipes, highland dance, drumming, and instrumental music. Some evening and afternoon attendance at performances will be required.
