Alan has been teaching at St.Johnsbury Academy the past 23 years. There, as instrumental and vocal director, he leads the Band, Chorus, Jazz Band, and Hilltones (select chorus) and other small ensembles. His groups have participated numerous times in the ACDA Madrigal Festival and the IAJE Flynn Jazz Festival He also teaches Music Theory and Appreciation classes as well as Guitar Class, and is the musical director for the Academy Theatre, having been involved in the production of over 21 shows. He has directed a number of district music festivals in both NH and Vermont. He has served as a judge in the audition process of the All State Music and Northeast District Music Festivals, in addition to managing various groups, for the past 23 years.. Since 2001, he has been Assistant Chair of Exhibits at the ACDA National Convention and Chair of the ACDA Eastern Conventions. He served as past president of the VT ACDA. He has twice hosted the All State Music Festival. In 1996, he was St.Johnsbury Academy’s Teacher of The Year. For the past nine years, he has been music director of the North Country Chorus, an 80 voice community chorus celebrating its 60th anniversary. He performs on occasion with Big Band North, St.Johnsbury’s area big band and Maple Leaf Seven, a Dixie Land ensemble.
Before coming to St.Johnsbury, Alan was instrumental director for four years in the Richford/Berkshire school district. He received his Bachelors from UVM in 1980 and his MA Ed. from Vandercook in Chicago in 1989. He and his wife, Stephanie have three children, Justin, Julia and Hannah and one grandson, Aidan.
