St. Johnsbury Academy Hosting “First Look” to Raise funds for NEK Youth Services

On Saturday, December 1st, St. Johnsbury Academy basketball will be scrimmaging opposing teams from Hartford and U-32 in a day-long event to raise funds for Northeast Kingdom Youth Services (NEKYS).

Four teams (boys and girls varsity and JV-A) will be in action, and the scrimmages will start at 10:00 a.m. when the Academy’s junior varsity girls team tips off against Hartford. The varsity girls (also against Hartford) will follow at 12:00 p.m.

Following a brief presentation to NEKYS at 1:45 p.m., the boys varsity will tip off against U-32 at 2:00 p.m. followed by the boys j.v. at 3:30 p.m.

Admission for the day will be $4 for adults and $2 for students. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and concessions available. All of the proceeds from the day will support NEKYS. NEKYS will be providing t-shirts for all participants to wear during warm ups. 

NEKYS’s mission is to create opportunities within the community for youth, families, and individuals to strengthen positive life skills and develop resiliency in the face of adversity.NEKYS staff is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to support families and youth through periods of crisis and conflict.  


NEKYS also operates Elm Street Transitional House, which provides homeless youth with safe overnight housing and with awake, overnight staff. The ten-bed facility provides an environment where homeless youth ages 16 through 21 have the opportunity to start formulating a plan for their successful transition to adulthood. Since opening October 1, 2007, the Elm Street Transitional House has provided 114 youth with over 10,000 nights of housing and life skills education.
