About the Academy
Founded in 1842, St. Johnsbury Academy is a comprehensive independent private high school widely recognized as an institution that fosters character, academic excellence, and civic responsibility in its students.

Serving young people from more than 50 Vermont and New Hampshire towns and boarding students from more than 25 countries and as many U.S. states, the Academy is a remarkably diverse community that actively encourages each student, teacher, and staff member to
Dream Big.
As we pursue those dreams, we adhere to
Core Values that include an uncompromising optimism regarding the potential of each person, embracing their dreams and providing every reasonable opportunity to do so. Our unique culture fosters a tradition of respect for all members of our community, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, cultural background, or family economic resources.
Our goals, as stated in the Academy’s current
Strategic Plan, include providing each student, regardless of background, interests, or learning style, “the opportunities needed to be successful communicators, problem-solvers, citizens, and scholars.” Toward that end, we employ a standards-based curriculum, individualized student-centered teaching techniques, and personalized support that transcends the classroom and the school day.
Equally important, members of the Academy community are committed to the belief, first voiced by former Headmaster Stanley Oldham 60 years ago, in our shared duty to “transmit this school not less but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
