Academy 2013 Commencement speaker Oscar Tang (seen here mountain-biking)
Every year, we try to pick a Commencement Speaker with a connection to either the graduating class or one of the reunion classes gathering over the weekend. This year’s speaker, Oscar L. Tang, is the brother of Nancy Tang Francis, a member of the class of 1953, holding their 60th reunion this year. This connection to Nancy and the Academy, however, was not the first way I had heard of Mr. Tang.
I first encountered Mr. Tang in an article celebrating his service and generosity to Andover, his alma mater where he served as Chairman of the Board and established a fund that allows any qualified student to attend Andover regardless of family income. The journalist recounted his life story, a story that connected him to St. Johnsbury. Mr. Tang was born in Shanghai. In 1949, at the end of the Chinese civil war, his parents fled to Hong Kong and tried to reestablish themselves. He was sent to school in the United States at the age of 11—to St. Johnsbury!
