Stars of St. Johnsbury

"I want you to feel the joy I feel and love this as much as I love it."

These words, spoken by Ziqi "James" Gong at the beginning of his Capstone presentation summed up my experience of Capstone Day on Friday. They echoed the words of Hank Eaton as he trained the 75 adults from our community (a record number!) who volunteered their time and expertise as guest evaluators. Hank said the first thing he hoped was that every presenter would help the audience experience the passion that had inspired the student to pursue their topic. James certainly did that: his presentation of "Stars above St. Johnsbury: A Brief Introduction of Astrophotography" was breathtakingly beautiful, professional, and articulate. For a high school senior speaking to hundreds of people, several of them complete strangers, in a second language, James displayed an uncommon level of expertise and facility in creating art from stars. I could have listened to him and watched him create his art for much longer than the 30 minutes he spent on the Fuller Hall stage.
