A Holiday Greeting

Every year at this time, I use this Christmas greeting as we take a break from our studies and work to celebrate the holidays. It comes from a letter written by Italian friar and painter Giovanni da Fiesole (Fra Angelico) who lived from 1387-1455, and for the twenty years that Bernier Mayo was Headmaster, he read this passage as an expression of his holiday wishes for the Academy community. I have continued this tradition for the past 16 years. Given the amount of violence, hatred, tension, and darkness in the news, and given the fact that Bernier passed away this summer, I have never found these words to be more meaningful.

SJA Supports The Giving Tree
Students Mario Albaladejo Aguado '17 from Spain and Jack Williams '17 from Bermuda pose with some of the gifts collected by St. Johnsbury Academy students, faculty, and staff for the The Giving Tree. Each year the SJA Community collects gifts and monetary donations to support Kingdom Community Services’ Giving Tree project. Local families and elderly members of the community request specific gifts through KCS, and Academy students, faculty, and staff then purchase the gifts requested by those individuals. Each year, the Academy gives over 100 gifts along with additional cash donations.

Seniors Named Presidential Scholars
The Vermont Agency of Education named two St. Johnsbury Academy seniors Vermont 2017 Presidential Scholars. They were Auguste Benjamin of Peacham and Emily Green of Waterford.

Each year, 10 boys and 10 girls from across the state of Vermont are awarded this honor for their academic achievement, outstanding leadership, and service to their communities. The award recipients will be recognized at a reception on January 9th at the State House.

The wrestlers started off their season with a tournament.

Students dressed up for the Winter Semi-Formal.

As usual, there was a photo booth! More photos are available here.

Students in one of Mr. Bosco's math classes dropped eggs off Streeter Bridge using rubber bands. As Mr. Bosco said, "The students tested the egg drop in the classroom using smaller numbers of rubber bands. Then they found a linear equation to model the distance the egg would fall for a given number of rubber bands and extrapolated for the height of Streeter Bridge."

Students also performed a physics experiment in Mr. Buhner's class.

Mr. Darling's painting class painted outside on a beautiful winter day.

French-speaking community members visited French classes and shared a Pouding Chomeur baked by students.

The Academy celebrated its 174th birthday with cupcakes.

Culinary students displayed their wedding cakes in the cafeteria; Chef B. helped with last-minute decorating.

Gingerbread (and pretzel) houses were also on display.

Friday was Ugly Sweater Day!

Additional Ugly Sweater photos are available here
