Recognizing Academic Character

We are fortunate to have several opportunities throughout the year to celebrate academic achievements. At the national level, we annually have dozens of AP Scholars and several National Merit Scholars. Our academic teams such as Math League, Scholars Bowl, Science Olympiad, Skills USA, and FIRST Robotics regularly place at or near the top in the state and regional competitions. At a more local level, every department honors a Student of the Year, and we honor our top students as Valedictorian and Salutatorian in June. As valuable as these opportunities and honors are, however, they are not the only way we honor our students for academic achievement. Each quarter, we honor about 100 students with Academic Recognition Awards that acknowledge what we call “academic character,” and to me, these awards are perhaps more valuable than those earned through competition or test scores.
